The NobleMotion Way of Working

The Power of Collaboration

Collaboration is the beating heart of NobleMotion’s mission. It is the catalyst that allows us to take bold creative leaps and discover entirely new pathways for art-making. By inviting new voices and diverse perspectives into our process, we deepen our understanding of the human condition and how interconnected we all truly are.

Our collaborative circle is vast, spanning fellow movers and makers, artists across various disciplines, service organizations, and experts outside of the arts. To date, NobleMotion has proudly partnered with filmmakers, photographers, lighting artists, AI and multimedia designers, costume and set designers, industrial designers, poets, composers, vocal directors, and neuroscientists and engineers. Every unique voice expands our boundaries and enriches the stories we tell.

A Dialogical Process

Everything we do begins with dialogue. While our ultimate goal is to create meaningful work that deeply moves an audience, we value an ongoing conversation with our collaborators and patrons. By challenging our own boundaries alongside our dancers, we cultivate a transparent, articulate creative process that reflects beautifully in the final performance.

Intention and Movement

A core element of our work is intentional direction. It is easy to rely on “cool” movement and lose sight of a piece’s meaning. In our process, we pay meticulous attention to detail, focusing heavily on character development and finding meaning through motion. We want our dancers to deeply understand not just what they are dancing, but why.

Shifting Explorations

Our choreographic explorations are constantly evolving. Rather than boxing our work into a single category, we embrace a diverse aesthetic. However, one constant remains: we love creating a catalyst for our dancers’ self-expression. We are drawn to humor, drama, and pathos—finding inspiration for these emotions in everyday people navigating complex relationships. People are fascinating, and we love learning about humanity through close observation.

What is Left Unsaid

Much of our choreography lives in what is left unsaid. We believe in developing movement that alludes to complex ideas, leaving enough space for the audience to find their own personal ownership of the work. For us, nothing is more satisfying than when a piece resonates deeply, encourages self-reflection, and inspires a patron to passionately share their own interpretation with us.

Theme and Vocabulary

Our thematic focus is broad, ranging from interpersonal dynamics to political and social commentaries. Whatever the subject, we always strive to make the dance personal and palpable. We willingly embrace any movement vocabulary that serves the theme, ensuring the choreography is uniquely tailored to communicate a specific emotion or idea.

Embracing the Absurd

As choreographers, we aren’t afraid to go against the grain. We often build creative boundaries only to break them. Much like life itself, we try to emulate a slightly irreverent sense of absurdity. Ultimately, we aim to create a beautiful illusion of reality in art while fostering a supportive space for growth, connection, and acceptance.
