About NobleMotion Dance

NobleMotion Dance (NMD), one of Texas’ premier dance companies, is recognized for its intense physicality and unique collaborations. Directed by Co-Artistic Directors Andy and Dionne Noble, NMD was named Houston’s Best Dance Company by the Houston Press in 2015, 2016, & 2019. Most notably, NMD was featured on the Emmy Award-winning ABC TV show American Crime for which NMD collaborated with Academy Award winner John Ridley to develop a four-minute contemporary dance work that was shown in its entirety on primetime TV and drew an audience viewership of 4 million. At the 2022 International Workshop on the Neural and Social Bases of Creative Movement, a conference of leading scientists and artists examining innovative research directions and creative approaches to science and art research, NMD presented LiveWire. LiveWire’s creative team includes the UH BRAIN Center, led by Dr. Jose Contreras-Vidal, and composer Anthony Brandt. This same arts/science team received a Mid-America Arts Alliance grant to create Meeting of Minds, a 35-minute duet where both dancers wear brain caps to explore neural synchrony. This work was featured in a TEDx Talk by Andy Noble, “Science Worth Dancing About” in 2023 and presented at the United Nations “AI for Good Global Summit” in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2024.

Other achievements include its inclusion on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster and graduation from the Houston Arts Alliance three-year Resident Incubator Program. Since the organization’s inception in 2009, NMD has collaborated with diverse and talented artists from a variety of disciplines including artificial intelligence, technology, and industrial designers; neuroscientists; composers and musicians; light and set artists; photographers, actors, and poets. NMD has received over 50 positive reviews and featured in articles from national publications including Entertainment Weekly, Dance Magazine, Dance Teacher, The Houston Chronicle, The Houston Press, and Texas Arts+Culture Magazine.

Since the organization’s inception in 2009, NobleMotion Dance has collaborated with talented artists from a variety of disciplines, including light artists, technology designers, set designers, composers, actors, poets, and with organizations such as the Holocaust Museum Houston and the environmental agency Trash Bash. The company’s activities consist of producing evening length productions, touring and educational components, running an annual summer dance intensive, and directing its pre-professional company, NMD2. They have toured works and evening length productions to cities such as New York, Boston, Arizona, Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Amarillo, San Marcos, and Huntsville. Its artistic directors have also had their work commissioned by a number of companies including Repertory Dance Theater (Utah), Malashock Dance (San Diego), Urbanity (Boston), Dallas Black Dance Theater (Dallas) and Bruce Wood Dance Project (Dallas). Over the last decade plus, NMD’s programming has garnered national exposure and continues to serve as a vehicle for providing a high level of cultural excellence.

The company’s dance programming provides incredible opportunity for bringing together a diverse collection of artists and art-lovers in one place so that they may share and understand one another’s point of view on deep levels. Central to the company’s process is that all perspectives are valued, and we work as a team to build stories that feel representative of the collective whole. We aim to reduce barriers by inviting creatives from a variety of backgrounds to the table so that we may generate inclusive narratives that are greater than any one person. Our hope is that this way of working captures the attention of a wide range of viewers and turns a diverse population onto the power of dance.

NMD’s mission is to make work that is emotionally daring and honest; inspires discourse and understanding amongst diverse communities; and focuses on innovative collaborations in the arts and sciences with an emphasis on emerging technologies. By following this mission, NMD has become an integral and respected part of the Texas dance community. The primary goals of NobleMotion Dance include the following.

What Sets Us Apart

NMD aspires to make distinctive work that is both satisfying to the most existential art minds while also being accessible and compelling to the general public. NMD strives to create a total theater experience. What makes us entirely unique is that a large component of our work integrates technology into live dance performances. This submerses the audience into new worlds, allowing them to see dance in a different way.

The work of NobleMotion Dance is relevant in that it establishes, cultivates, and promotes greater public appreciation of dance through the creation and performance of innovative dance works. The development of these dance works involves collaborative efforts of highly talented artists from a variety of disciplines. This process allows for a deeper level of engagement in the creative process and shared experience of problem solving. NobleMotion’s team of creators investigates current trends in technology and discovers ways to integrate the research into dance in a way that it connects both the art and the technology to the human condition.
